Substitutions & Variations
This is a great recipe for using what you have on hand.
- Add meat - you can use meat ravioli, or add a layer of ground beef or pepperoni to the casserole
- Change the sauce - you could use Alfredo sauce instead of marinara
- Make it Tex-Mex - switch things up by using beef ravioli instead of cheese, Mexican-style cheese instead of mozzarella, plain breadcrumbs instead of Italian-style, cojita cheese instead of Parmesan, and enchilada sauce instead of marinara; garnish with cilantro instead of basil
Storage and freezing
Leftovers can be stored for about 5 days in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
If you are using refrigerated ravioli, you could assemble in a freezer-safe baking dish and freeze this before baking. To bake, thaw overnight in the refrigerator then bake as directed in recipe. Generally, the texture of frozen pasta does not stand up well to thawing and refreezing.
